Welcome to the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences

This is an exciting time for biomedical sciences at UCF.  The Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences will help the College of Medicine build a research intensive medical school where cutting edge medical research will span the entire spectrum from the laboratory bench to bedside of the patients, providing a great environment of training physicians and biomedical researchers. We vigorously pursue our mission, to build nationally recognized research programs and undergraduate and graduate programs in biomedical sciences.   The School is well on its way of accomplishing its goal towards hiring 34 new faculty members to build vigorous research programs focused on cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases and infectious diseases.

BSBS Building April 2008

Construction of a new Burnett Biomedical Sciences building is nearly complete at the UCF Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona.  The 198,000 sq.ft. five story building with a major transgenic animal facility and Biosafety level 3 laboratories is expected to be ready for occupancy in early 2009. It is the first of several buildings that will create a biomedical cluster that will include UCF’s College of Medicine, the Burnham Institute and a satellite University of Florida research building, a new veterans administration hospital and Nemours Children’s Hospital all of which will have vigorous biomedical research programs. In addition, the School has formed active partnerships with other units such as the College of Optics and Photonics, the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Nanoscience Technology Center to build interdisciplinary research and education programs in the innovative applications of photonics and nanoscience to biomedical problems. The School recently updated its undergraduate curriculum to better prepare students for health professions and graduate studies in biomedical sciences. The School also provides pre-health advisement for UCF students to prepare them for entry into health professional schools. Our BS degree program in Biotechnology started Fall 2007.

We have a revised MS program in Molecular Biology and Microbiology. Our Medical Laboratory Science Program prepares tomorrow's medical laboratory technologists. We are currently initiating an accelerated BS/MS, MS/MBA and PhD/MBA program in biotechnology to help provide a skilled workforce at the bench level and managerial level for Florida’s biotechnology/biomedical industry. The interdisciplinary PhD program in Biomedical Science prepares tomorrow's biomedical scientists.

The Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences is committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and to building innovative interdisciplinary research programs to discover solutions for important biomedical problems and to provide a highly creative environment to foster our educational programs.
